SDG HANGOUT
From Inclusion to Impact: Empowering Women for Leadership, Enterprise & Growth (SDGs 5 & 8)

Dr. Victor Abbey delivered a compelling presentation on the theme “Men as Champions of Women’s Leadership: Partnering for Inclusive Growth and Lasting Legacy” at a quarterly Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Hangout hosted by Dr Genevieve Pearl Duncan with focus on SDGs 5 & 8, held at Tomreik Hotel, Accra.
In his thought-provoking address, emphasizing women’s leadership as a shared responsibility and a strategic imperative for national development, Dr. Abbey challenged participants to reframe gender equality as a leadership and development issue rather than a gender debate. He noted that organizations and nations achieve better outcomes when leadership opportunities are based on competence, character, and merit, enabling everyone to contribute their full potential.
Drawing on practical leadership experiences and examples from public service, the corporate sector, and security institutions, he underscored the influential role men can play as mentors, sponsors, advocates, and allies in creating pathways for women to lead. He stressed that genuine leadership is measured not by the authority one holds, but by the opportunities one creates for others.
Dr. Abbey further highlighted the strong connection between Sustainable Development Goal 5 (Gender Equality) and Sustainable Development Goal 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), explaining that inclusive leadership drives innovation, strengthens institutions, and promotes sustainable economic growth.
The presentation featured interactive discussions and concluded with committed themselves to mentoring emerging women leaders, promoting fairness and inclusion, challenging bias, and creating workplaces where leadership is determined by competence and integrity.
The session inspired participants to become intentional partners in advancing women’s leadership, leaving them with practical commitments to foster more inclusive organizations and communities. Dr. Abbey’s presentation served as a powerful reminder that lasting leadership is defined by the lives we empower, the barriers we remove, and the legacy we leave for future generations.
